OUTDOOR LEADERSHIP SCHOOL (NOLS)
Contact: www.nols.eduWhat: A non-profit wilderness leadership school, NOLS offers courses "in the world's most spectacular wilderness classrooms". A NOLS course is "an awe-inspiring, transformative experience that develops active, positive leaders". Courses cover leadership and teamwork skills, outdoor skills, environmental studies, as well as specific outdoor activities like mountaineering, sea kayaking, rock climbing, wilderness medicine, and others. Who: Anyone age 14 and up. Programs exist for 14-15 only and16-17 only. Other programs have a minimum age of 16 or higher. Location: In wilderness areas all over the U.S. and worldwide, including Brazil, New Zealand, Patagonia, Alaska, and others. Duration: Programs range from ten days to full 93 day semesters. Cost/Benefits: NOLS courses are not cheap, and range from $885 for a nine day leader training course, to $11,875 for a Patagonia semester. Some scholarships are available. Over 400 colleges and universities offer college credit for NOLS courses. |
