What:  Service Civil International, founded in 1921, offer both short-term and long term international workcamps.  A workcamp is a "place anywhere in the world where people of all backgrounds, ideologies, and nationalities live and volunteer together for two to four weeks on a grassroots project organized by a local sponsor for non-commercial causes."   "Peace through deeds, not words" is their motto.  

Who:  Anyone 16 and older for U.S. camps, 18 and older for a developed country, and 21 and older for a third-world country.

Location:  Throughout the U.S. and worldwide.

Duration:  Camps last two to three weeks and most are in the summer.  Long-term placements begin at three months.

Cost/Benefits:   There is a yearly fee of $35 for membership.  First time camps cost $195 overseas and $80 in the U.S.  Additionally camps (you can do up to three per season) are $40 in the U.S. and $80 international.  These prices include room and board during camp.  Long term placements cost $175 for overseas and $65 for the U.S.
